It was officially discovered in 1974. It was the Dominican jeweler Miguel Mendez, who mistook it for turquoise. Because of this similarity, larimar is also called Haitian or Dominican turquoise. It was Méndez who gave the name of larimar. The name was made up of two syllables, lar and mar. The first is a derivative of the name of the jeweler's daughter, Larissa, and the second is taken from Spanish and means "sea.
